Scoliosis & Scheuermann’s Kyphosis

At our clinic, we offer a dedicated service for people living with scoliosis and Scheuermann’s kyphosis. These conditions benefit from a focused approach to movement, posture, and strength, which is why we provide structured programs designed for individuals with these spinal differences.

What Is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is more than just a sideways curve. It is a condition where the spine twists and shifts in three dimensions, creating “S” or “C”-shaped curves. This can change how the ribs, shoulders, waist and hips appear and how the back feels during daily activities.

Signs & Symptoms of Scoliosis

• One shoulder or hip appearing higher

• Uneven waist or rib prominence

• A visible curve or twist in the spine

• Clothing sitting unevenly

• Back stiffness or discomfort (more common in adults)

• Fatigue after standing or sitting

What Is Scheuermann’s Kyphosis?

Scheuermann’s kyphosis is a condition where the upper back becomes more rounded than usual. This happens when the vertebrae develop in a wedge shape during adolescence, creating a sharper forward curve that can affect posture and comfort.

Signs & Symptoms of Scheuermann’s Kyphosis

• Noticeable rounded upper back

• Difficulty standing fully upright

• Tightness or aching in the upper or mid-back

• Hamstring tightness

• Fatigue when sitting or standing

• Reduced flexibility

How Physiotherapy Can Help

We provide structured, guided programs to support people with scoliosis or Scheuermann’s kyphosis. Our approach focuses on posture awareness, strength, mobility, and confidence in everyday movement. At our clinic, Felicia Wong is the clinician to work with for scoliosis and Scheuermann’s patients. She has extensive experience with this population, including both adolescents and adults.

Physiotherapy Treatment Options

1. PSSE (Physiotherapy Scoliosis Specific Exercises)

PSSE is one-to-one, curve-specific exercise for scoliosis and Scheuermann’s kyphosis. Your program is tailored to your individual curve pattern – focusing on posture correction, expansion and activation techniques, and maintaining improved alignment through daily activities.

2. Clinical Exercise

Our Clinical Exercise service includes both Pilates-based movement and gym-based strength training. These sessions help improve spinal support, whole-body strength, flexibility, and movement confidence.

While not as curve-specific as PSSE, Clinical Exercise provides an excellent foundation for building strength and stability. Most people begin one-to-one so your physiotherapist can teach safe, effective movement strategies, then transition into small group classes when appropriate.

Clinical Exercise may include:

• Pilates-based reformer or mat work

• Free weights and resistance training

• Cable or machine-based strength exercises

• Mobility and flexibility training

• Functional movement patterns for daily life

3. Manual Treatment

Hands-on therapy can help reduce stiffness, ease muscle tension, and improve mobility. This may include (but is not limited to):

• Soft tissue release

• Joint mobilisation

• Dry needling

Manual therapy is often paired with exercise for long-term improvement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PSSE different from Clinical Exercise?

Yes. PSSE is targeted at the three-dimensional nature of the curve; Clinical Exercise builds general strength and can be adapted around it. Many people benefit from both

Do I need an X-ray?

An X-ray is often used to confirm the diagnosis, measure the curve, and monitor for progression as needed. Your physiotherapist can guide you on whether imaging is appropriate.

Can adults benefit from physiotherapy?

Yes. Adults often experience stiffness or discomfort related to their spinal curve, and physiotherapy can help manage symptoms, improve mobility, and strengthen the muscles that support the spine.

Will I always need one-to-one sessions?

Not always. PSSE sessions are one-to-one to ensure precise coaching and tailored correction. Clinical Exercise typically starts one-to-one, then transitions into small group classes when appropriate.

What if I’m not sure about committing to an initial appointment?

We offer a 50% discounted Scoliosis Triage Interview- a phone consultation with the therapist to discuss any questions beforehand, so you can decide with confidence.
